 Variable Conductance Heat Pipe (VCHP) incorporates a precise quantity of non-condensable gas (NCG), such as nitrogen or helium, alongside the phase-change working fluid. This NCG forms a movable gas plug within the condenser section. The operational principle leverages thermal expansion and contraction:

  • At elevated temperatures: The NCG compresses, expanding the active condenser area and enhancing heat transfer capacity.

  • At reduced temperatures: The NCG expands, occupying condenser space and reducing heat dissipation intensity.

VCHPs passively regulate thermal efficiency across varying loads or environmental conditions without requiring active control systems. This self-regulating capability enables precise, wide-range temperature control within a single device, making them ideal for spacecraft and applications demanding strict thermal stability.

Currently, VCHPs are recognized as a critical solution for lunar landers to survive extreme lunar night conditions, where passive thermal regulation is essential. Domestic manufacturers in China have already developed the capability to produce advanced VCHP systems, underscoring their growing role in next-generation aerospace thermal management.
