CUSTOM HEAT SINK, PERFECTED FOR YOU.

Does a Heat Sink Come With a CPU?

It’s a question we hear all the time: “Do I need to buy a separate heat sink for my CPU, or does it come in the box?” This is a great question, and the answer is… it depends. The short answer is sometimes, but not always. The long answer will help you understand why this matters and how to know for sure.

The “Included” Heat Sink: What to Look For

Many CPUs, especially from brands like Intel and AMD, are sold as part of a “retail box” or “boxed” version. These packages are designed for consumers and typically include a stock heat sink. This is a basic cooler that’s perfectly fine for most users.

What’s in the box?

  • For Intel CPUs, you’ll often find a stock cooler included with their non-K series processors (e.g., Core i5-13400, Core i7-13700). These coolers are designed to handle the CPU’s default heat output.

  • For AMD CPUs, the situation is similar. Many of their Ryzen processors come with a stock cooler, sometimes even a more advanced one like the Wraith Prism or Wraith Stealth, depending on the specific model.

How do you know if it’s included?

The easiest way to tell is by looking at the product listing. Online retailers and product pages will specify if it’s a “boxed with cooler” version or a “tray” or “OEM” version, which doesn’t include one. The price is also a good indicator; a CPU without a cooler will usually be a little cheaper.

When You Definitely Need to Buy a Separate Cooler

There are several scenarios where a stock cooler isn’t included or isn’t enough, and you’ll need to buy your own.

  • High-End “K” or “X” Series CPUs: Processors designed for overclocking, like Intel’s “K” series (e.g., Core i9-14900K) or AMD’s high-end “X” series, do not come with a heat sink. These powerful CPUs generate a lot of heat, and manufacturers assume you’ll be using a high-performance aftermarket cooler to handle it.

  • OEM or Tray CPUs: These are often sold in bulk to computer manufacturers (Original Equipment Manufacturers). They are not packaged for individual consumers and never come with a cooler.

  • High-Performance Gaming or Workstations: Even if your CPU comes with a stock cooler, it might not be enough if you’re building a system for intense gaming, video editing, or other demanding tasks. Stock coolers are a good starting point, but they can’t match the cooling power of a quality aftermarket cooler.

So, while some CPUs do come with a heat sink, always check the product description to be sure. If you’re building a high-performance machine or just want better cooling and quieter performance, investing in an aftermarket cooler is always a smart move.
